Ortaca, Muğla ili'nin doğusunda yer alır. Batı ve kuzeyinde Köyceğiz, doğusunda Dalaman ve güneyinde Akdeniz bulunur. Muğla ile Fethiye arasındaki ana karayolu ilçenin kuzeyinden geçer.
Önceleri Köyceğiz'e bağlı bir belde iken 1987 yılında ilçe haline getirilmiştir. Bir doğa harikası olan ve dünyaca meşhur Dalyan, Ortaca ilçesi sınırları içinde bir beldedir. İlçenin turistik açıdan önemli pek çok yeri bulunmaktadır. Ortaca, Muğla ilinin en güzel İlçelerinden biridir. Akdeniz ile Ege Bölgesi sınırında olan Ortaca, İzmir ve Antalya’ ya eşit uzaklıktadır. Fethiye ve Marmaris arasının orta yerinde oluşuyla da; adından da anlaşılacağı gibi ORTACA ismini almıştır. Ortaca ticaretin, sanayinin, turizmin, tarım ve hayvancılığın, doğal ve tarihi güzelliğin tümünü bünyesinde kapsayan bir konuma sahiptir. 12 İlçenin bağlı olduğu Muğla İlinde Milas, Fethiye, Marmaris, Bodrum’ dan sonra Ortaca, Ticaret ve Sanayi dalında 5. sıradadır. İlçemizde okuma yazma oranı yüzde yüz olup, sosyal ve kültürel etkinliklerin yoğun olduğu bir yerdir. Gerek iklim gerek toprak yapısı nedeniylede son derece bereketli bir ovaya sahiptir. İnsanlarının sıcakkanlı, misafirperver oluşu ayrı bir özelliktir. Bu nedenle Ortaca, Türkiye’ nin birçok illerinden göç almış ve nüfusu 41.704 olarak belirlenmiştir. Son nüfus sayımında Ortaca ilçe merkezinde 25.816 kişi sayılmış olup; Beldemiz Dalyan’ da 4491, köylerimizde 10531 kişinin yaşadığı tespit edilen ilçemizde kadın ve erkek nüfus orantısı yarı yarıya çıkmıştır.
Ortaca şehir merkezinden 15 dakikada Sarıgerme Plajı, Aşı Koyu Plajı ve İztuzu Plajına ulaşılır. 30 dakikalık bir sürede de yaylalara ya da Dalaman Çayı üzerinde rafting yapılan merkeze ulaşılabilir. İsteyen hava yoluyla İstanbul Ankara’ ya; isteyen kara yoluyla İzmir ve Antalya’ ya sabah gidip akşama dönebilir.
Ortaca’ nın en belirgin özelliğinden biri de; diğer turistik yörelere göre İlçede yaşamın ucuz olmasıdır. Bu nedenle komşu İlçelerden ve Beldelerden alışveriş için insanlar Ortaca’ ya gelir.
